Max-score Spelltower tactics

Three principles consistently produce 400+ scores on the daily Spelltower: clear the bottom, save high-value letters, and exploit diagonals.

Why gravity wins games

Every cleared tile pulls everything above it down by one cell. A single word that clears 4 bottom-row tiles drops 24 letters into new positions — which often creates 2-3 new viable words you couldn't see before. Bottom-row clears are generative moves; top-row clears are dead-end.

Strategy: scan the bottom 3 rows for cleanable patterns first. If you can't clear from the bottom, look at the second-lowest row, and so on. Top-row words are last resorts.

Letter value strategy

A 5-letter word using all 1-point letters scores about 7-9 points (with length bonus). A 5-letter word containing a Q or Z scores 15-20 points — the same length, double the value.

When you see a Q or Z on the board, the move worth tracking is: can you build a 5-7 letter word containing it? If yes, do it. If no, you might burn the high-value letter on a 3-letter word (still worth 11+ points but well short of the potential).

Diagonal adjacency tricks

Many players default to orthogonal moves and forget diagonals. Spelltower uses 8-way adjacency — including all four diagonals.

This unlocks two important patterns:

  • Snake reach: a word can spiral diagonally to reach a letter that's 2 rows up and 2 columns over without going through the cells in between.
  • Diagonal cascades: clearing a diagonal line of 5 tiles produces a stair-step gravity pattern that opens up the entire board.

Word order matters

Two different word sequences with identical letter sets can produce different scores. Earlier moves shape later opportunities. Plan 2 moves ahead when possible:

  1. First move: clear bottom-left to drop tiles toward bottom-right.
  2. Second move: now-positioned tiles enable a longer or higher-value word.

Spelltower rewards thinking about the board after your move, not the board you're looking at right now.

FAQ

What's the best Spelltower strategy?

Clear the bottom rows first — gravity rewards you most when there are many tiles above to fall and combine. Save high-value letters (J, Q, X, Z) for long words to maximize the length multiplier. Use diagonal adjacency to reach otherwise-isolated tiles.

What's a "good" Spelltower score?

On the daily 6×7 board, 200+ is solid, 400+ is great, 600+ is exceptional. Per-letter point values follow Scrabble; a 7-letter word with two consonant points + length bonus can earn 30+ points alone.

Does the dictionary include proper nouns or plurals?

No proper nouns. Common plurals are accepted when the base word is in the dictionary. The bundled corpus is ~2,600 common English words across 3-7 letters.
