Wordle

A daily web-based word puzzle in which the player has six guesses to identify a five-letter target word, with per-letter color feedback after each guess.

Origin and context

Created by Josh Wardle in 2021 and acquired by The New York Times in 2022. Each daily puzzle uses a curated answer drawn from a list of ~2,315 hand-picked five-letter English words. Wordle popularised the share-string format (green/yellow/gray emoji squares) and the daily-puzzle cadence that the rest of the category inherits.
