Solve the daily Mini in under two minutes
Start with the 3-letter answers, use the cross-check method, and lean on common crossword stalwarts (ERA, OREO, AREA, EERIE) for quick wins.
Start with 3-letter answers
In a 5×5 with black-square pattern, you typically have 4 three-letter entries (the corners). Three-letter answers in crosswords are almost always one of ~50 common words — ERA, ARE, ALE, OBI, ATE, REI, ARC, etc. Even without reading the clue, the constraint of just three letters severely limits options.
Bonus: every 3-letter answer locks 3 of the 5 cells in two intersecting longer answers (the two answers it crosses through). After filling a single 3-letter answer, you've effectively given yourself 6 letters in adjacent 5-letter entries.
The cross-check method
Don't commit to an answer until at least two intersecting letters confirm it. If 1 Across is “Calendar division” (3 letters), it could be DAY, WEEK (4), MONTH (5), YEAR (4), but in 3 letters: DAY. Confirm by checking the 1 Down cross — if 1 Down starts with D, you're right.
This sounds slow but it's actually faster than fishing for plausible answers and then having to erase them.
Vowel-placement tricks
English words use vowels predictably. In a 5-letter word:
- Positions 1, 3, 5 hold vowels about 50% of the time.
- Two vowels in adjacent positions usually means a diphthong (AU, EE, EI, OO).
- Y can be a vowel in 4 of the 5 positions (rarely position 1).
Common 3-letter answers
Memorize these — they appear in roughly 30% of all crosswords:
ERA · ARE · ALE · OBI · ATE · ARC · OAR · OAT · OWE · OWL · EAR · EAT · ETA · ICE · ICY · IRE · NEE · ONE · ORE · ORC · TEA · TIE · ELI · ALI · INK · IRA · ETC · EGG · ERR · EYE
FAQ
What's the fastest way to solve a Mini Crossword?
Start with the 3-letter answers — they have the fewest plausible options. Each 3-letter answer locks two intersecting letters in adjacent longer answers, which dramatically constrains the rest of the grid. From there, cycle to the answer with the most filled-in letters.
What's a good Mini Crossword time?
Sub-2-minute is solid, sub-1-minute is sharp. NYT-experienced solvers regularly hit 45-second runs. The PuzzleDaily Mini is comparable difficulty to the NYT Mini on Tuesday-Thursday.
Should I use Reveal?
Reveal Word fills the current entry — useful when you're completely stuck on one entry and don't want to fish. Check briefly highlights wrong letters — useful when you suspect one of two cross-intersecting answers is wrong. Both cost you the "no aids" version of the solve.
